OUR MISSION

Mission Statement: Ohio’s Hill Country Heritage Area is dedicated to the identification, protection and appropriate development of the natural, cultural, recreational and economic resources that make up Appalachian Ohio to enhance the quality of life of the region’s residents and to welcome visitors to experience the area’s rich heritage, natural beauty and traditions.

Ohio’s Hill Country Heritage Area encompasses the state’s Appalachian region and is one of Ohio’s officially designated heritage areas. Nationally, regional heritage areas have been established to recognize and build upon the unique natural, cultural and historic resources of a region to provide economic development opportunities for the region’s residents. Its distinctive physical environment of rolling hills, streams and river valleys and forested areas easily identifies Ohio’s Hill Country. But, it is much more. It is an area that is rich in history and cultural traditions including many of Ohio’s most significant prehistoric archaeological sites; a number of its earliest permanent settlements; important historic transportation routes including canals, rivers and roads; a variety of industries including coal mining, pottery and ceramics; and a rich tradition of Appalachian arts and culture. Ohio’s Hill Country Heritage Area is a non-profit membership organization. It was initiated in 1996 as a project of the Ohio Arts Council and became an independent non-profit organization in 1998. It members include individuals, organizations and businesses who support the organization’s mission and are working to improve the quality of life in Appalachian Ohio.
