Roamin' the Hills - Harrison County

Twenty-Five Attend Event in Harrison County Roamin' the Hills Enlightens

The restored Buckeye Trail Century Barn at Tappan Lake near Deersville was the host for a “Roamin’ The Hills” gathering sponsored by Ohio’s Hill Country Heritage Area on August 13. After visits to many attractions on the way, “roamers” enjoyed locally produced wine from the nearby Coffee Cake Winery and food catered by Elaine’s Restaurant in nearby Deersville. Twenty-five persons were in attendance as Heritage Awards were presented to the Buckeye Trail Association for their contribution to the Built Environment in the region and the Lifetime Achievement Award to Jim and Gwen Young of Somerset for their contribution to historic preservation and conservation in Perry County. Buckeye Trail volunteer Russell Johnson gave on overview of how the historic Buckeye Trail Century Barn is being restored by volunteers to serve as a hostel for hikers. Andrew Bashaw, the Ohio-Pennsylvania coordinator for the North Country National Scenic Trail and director of the Buckeye Trail gave a pictorial presentation on the development of these trails in Ohio and across the nation. Tom O’Grady provided a slide show and commentary on “Barns in Ohio’s Hill Country.” Dr. Lorle Porter closed the evening with a dramatic presentation on how graduates of Franklin College in nearby New Athens and a wing of the Presbyterian Church prominent in Harrison County shaped the abolitionist movement in America during the Civil War. The Museum of Coal and Clark Gable Museum in Cadiz and the Franklin MuseumBT Barn in New Athens stayed open late to welcome “roamers” to Harrison County. The next Roamin’ The Hills event is set for Saturday, September 19 at the Ohio Paw Paw Festival near Albany in Athens County. Buckeye Trail Century Barn
